ABOUT US

Brief History

Sketch

Rato Bangala School was founded by Shanta Dixit and Milan Dixit in 1992 with a commitment to transform the Nepali education landscape. Their aim was to nurture  a new generation of Nepali children to be analytical and independent thinkers in an environment that empowers them to thrive socially, emotionally and cognitively and build essential skills to succeed in life.

Affiliated since its inception with the  Bank Street College of Education in New York, Rato Bangala introduced and adapted  the best of its progressive education culture to  the Nepali context. The two founders replicated Bank Street’s innovative teaching methods to establish an institution of excellence in Nepal.

A school that started with a bold pedagogical experiment with 16 students grew to become the first  school in Nepal to introduce a child-centered  curriculum. The beneficiaries of this project over the past three decades are not only the students who have attended Rato Bangala School and their families, but also the larger community. Sister organisations Rato Bangala Foundation is a UNESCO awarded non-profit that works on teacher education, upscaling the school’s experience across Nepal.

To make learning meaningful and relevant, the school works closely with parents and the wider community. It emphasizes cooperative action, community service, and critical thinking. With its rigorous and stimulating curriculum, the school helps develop confident and articulate individuals who are committed to social justice and development.
